DNIPRO (former Dnipropetrovsk)

Dnipro is firstly associated with an industrial city. This is true, but there is another side of the city on the Dnipro River. These are beautiful parks, modern avenues and boulevards, a large number of diverse museums and theatres. In front of your eyes will be a modern, rhythmic city that moves with the times.

The city was named after the Dnipro River, which divides it into two banks. They, in turn, are bridged by Kaidatskyi, Tsentralnyi, Pivdennyi, Amurskyi i Merefo-Khersonskyi bridges, as well as a pedestrian bridge to the Monastyrskyi Island.

One of the most beautiful places in the city is the Embankment, which is considered to be the longest in Europe (about 30 km). There are many different sculptures and monuments, flowers and trees, cafes and restaurants. There one can sit on the longest in Ukraine 50-meter "family" bench. The Embankment is especially beautiful in the evening.

In the very centre of the Embankment is the Dnipro Circus. It was opened at the end of the 19th century. For such a long history, several buildings have been changed. Now the circus is in the building of 1980, nowhere in the world one can find the analogues of this building. Its originality is in the dome that resembles a tent.

From theEmbankment you can get to the Monastyrskyi Island using the pedestrian bridge. On the island, there is a sightseeing platform with beautiful panoramic view of the city. At the foot of the platform, one can hear the noise of the artificial waterfall 17 meters high. The jewel of the island is the white Nicholas church, built in 1999. Its gilded dome is visible from different places of the city. Another attraction is the monument to the great Kobzar Taras Shevchenko. This monument is one of the largest in Ukraine.

The Merefo-Khersonskyi railway bridge passes through the Monastyrskyi Island. It is included in the list of architectural monuments. Its uniqueness is that it is the only railway bridge in Europe that has curved trajectory (that is, with turn).

On the right bank of the Dnipro, you will have a wonderful vacation in the park named after Taras Shevchenko. The park is located at the top of the hill, therefore from the sightseeing platform there is a picturesque view of the Dnipro River and the Embankment.

However, no less we like the Central Park named after Hloba. It is the oldest park in Dnipro, founded at the end of the 18th century by the Zaporizhzhian osavul Lazar Hloba. The heart of the park is the natural lake inhabited by fish and waterfowl. On the shore is located the Summer Theater. During the warm time of the year, one can have a catamaran cruise. In 1936, the children's railway was built in the park, which operates to this day.

There are many theatres and museums in the city.

Historical museum named after Dmytro Yavornytskyi is the only one of its kind in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where unique exhibits of the world and national importance are concentrated. The museum was founded in 1849. In the museum's holdings there are about 250 thousand of antiquity items, including relics of the Zaporizhzhia Cossacks, printed editions of the 16th-17th centuries, hieratical collection, weapons, furniture, monuments of Oriental cultures, among them is the mummy of Egyptian woman with a child. The museum has the largest collection of ancient stone sculptures in Ukraine, in total 80 statues. The most unique is the Kernosivskyi idol (3 millennia BC) and, of course, the Stone Images Polovetski statues (12th-13th centuries), found in the southern Ukrainian steppes.

The Aerospace Museum is the only museum of rocket and space equipment in Ukraine. The museum exhibits true space stations, satellites, military missiles and many other interesting objects.

If you want to plunge into the days of the past century, welcome to a unique museum of ancient equipment. The Time Machines Retro Car Museum presents the cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses and other machines of different years. Retro-exhibits such as filling stations, telephone boxes, mailboxes and other attributes of the Soviet era transmit the spirit of the past epoch particularly atmospheric.

The Dnipropetrovsk Opera and Ballet Theatre is the witness to the popular opera and ballet performances, performances of well-known singers. Near the Opera Theater on the square the fountain is located.

One of the oldest drama theatres in Ukraine is the Dniprovskyi National Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre named after T. Shevchenko. The repertoire includes works of Ukrainian classical, foreign and contemporary drama. Academic theatre also offers to the viewers to watch fairy tales.

In Dnipro there is a unique one-man theatre "Kryk". Just imagine that one person is the actor and director, script writer and make-up man, artist and costume designer, music editor and scene designer. This person is Mykhailo Melnyk, Honoured Artist of Ukraine, laureate of numerous awards.

Dnipro can be proud of its House of Organ and Chamber Music. After a long restoration in 1986 in the old Mykolaiv (Briansk) church constructed in 1915, a 12-tonne bimanual concert organ made by the famous German Sauer Company was set. In this beautiful building for many years immortal musical works have been played.

In the very heart of the Dnipro is the Menorah centre located. It is the largest Jewish complex in the world; its main task is the revival of the Jewish community in Dnipro and in the whole in Ukraine, as well as to support the idea of tolerance to different nationalities. The centre consists of seven towers, which symbolize the temple seven-branched candlestick, a symbol of the Israel people. This is one of the most interesting places that you should visit in the city of Dnipro.
